Fall Prevention for Seniors: A Physiotherapist's Guide

Falls are one of the biggest threats to independence in later life, but they are far from inevitable. With the right balance and strength training, most older adults can move more confidently and significantly lower their risk of falling.
Why falls happen
Falls usually result from a combination of factors: weaker leg muscles, slower balance reactions, reduced confidence, vision changes, and hazards around the home. Because the causes stack up, addressing several of them together gives the best protection.
Exercises that reduce fall risk
Strengthen the legs
Sit-to-stand from a sturdy chair is one of the most effective exercises — it builds the leg strength needed for standing, walking, and stairs. Aim for slow, controlled repetitions.
Train balance safely
- Stand near a counter and practise standing with feet close together.
- Progress to standing on one leg while holding support.
- Practise gentle heel-to-toe walking along a wall.
Always have a stable surface within reach when practising balance.
Make the home safer
- Remove loose rugs and clutter from walkways.
- Improve lighting, especially near stairs and at night.
- Add grab rails in the bathroom and use non-slip mats.
